Butterflies and Friends
Wildlife seen on this page includes cold blooded critters like amphibians, reptiles, fish, crustaceans and insects. Please see the Fabulous Frogs page for a selection of frog and toad images. Unlike mammals and birds, cold blooded animals depend on their surroundings to control their body temperature. Each species seen here plays an important part in its ecosystem.
Whilst some of these animals may not appeal to certain people, most of us have a healthy appreciation of butterflies. Butterflies are either residents, meaning they live in an area all year round, or migratory, meaning they relocate depending on the season. In countries where it snows, some butterflies hibernate during the winter months. It is hard to believe that a small, fragile butterfly can spend the long, frozen winter months, tucked away in a secret location like a tiny popsicle - and survive to emerge in the spring. Isn't nature amazing?
